Gateway to Berlin & Brandenburg

Bernau

10 km SE of Basdorf and on the S-Bahn S2 line to Berlin is the market town of Bernau. Legend has it that Albrecht der Bär (Albert the Bear), first Marquis of Mark Brandenburg, caused the founding of the town in 1140 because of the good beer that was offered to him there. Whether that is true or not, Bernau has a long history and much of its mediaeval town walls and moats have been restored. You can rediscover the towns past through the Local History Museums at the Steintor, the preserved town gate, and the Henkerhaus (hangman's house).
