Schloss Dammsmühle

A 1.5 km walk or cycle ride through the forest south of Basdorf brings you to an unexpected sight: a seemingly abandoned fairy-tale castle standing beside a still lake. This is Schloss Dammsmühle, a neo-Baroque mansion built in 1768 on the site of a flour mill owned by the Cistercian monks, and later a hunting lodge for The Great Elector, Friedrich Wilhelm I of Brandenburg.
Now the mansion stands half in ruins, its stuccoed walls daubed with graffiti. But there is a great romantic feeling about the place, which still often hosts events such as mediaeval markets, wine-tasting festivals, and Christmas markets.
